The Greens

I am running because I believe Council should be more responsive to the community.

As a Councillor I would work to ensure Council is more accountable and transparent and all Council actions reflect community aspirations and wishes. Over the past decade, I have been an active member of the South Precinct. This has made me aware of how important accountability and transparency are to the community.

Having grown up in Melbourne, I have been a resident of Gerringong for over 30 years. I completed a BSc(Hons) degree at Melbourne University and worked as a Biochemist at The Royal Melbourne Hospital and a Research Scientist at St Bartholomew’s Hospital London. In 1985, together with my wife, we established a specialist healthcare and scientific recruitment business. We relocated to Sydney in 1986 to establish a head office and shortly thereafter experienced the beauty and uniqueness of Kiama, purchasing Karawarra from the Miller family in October 1990.

Invited by Council, I was a member of the community panel involved in the development of the current Local Environment Plan. The inappropriate developments that have occurred in the municipality, particularly over the past decade, are irreversibly eroding the unique character of our area. I think my scientific background and management of a successful business, would enable me to make a significant contribution to Council decision making processes. I strongly believe Council decisions must be guided by the urgency with which the community responds to the threat of climate change.

Having travelled to all the continents, apart from Antarctica, I am convinced that the Kiama municipality is unique. I have not seen the combination of forested escarpment, rolling green hills and spectacular beaches and ocean anywhere else on my travels. We must strive to preserve, protect and enhance the unique qualities of our special Municipality. As a Greens Councillor, I would do my utmost to achieve this.

In my spare time I enjoy family get togethers, gardening, golf, travel, cinema and bird watching. I would strive to ensure that all Council activities, decisions and responses, are relevant and appropriate to maintaining our unique part of the world, in the broader context of ecological sustainability and climate change.
