Steve has been a resident of Kiama for 40 years. He has worked in and around local government for thirty-three years, twenty-three of those for Kiama Council as part of the construction/maintenance outdoor staff in a variety of projects including council estates and the upgrade of Terralong and Manning Streets.
Steve was also the outdoor delegate for the United Services Union. Later he was seconded to the USU from council and in this role serviced councils in the southern half of NSW from Sutherland Shire to Bega and west to Broken Hill. Eventually Steve was appointed full-time to the USU and served for ten years representing council employees (both indoor and outdoor staff). He was responsible for the servicing of six council areas. It was in this role that Steve gained experience in the amalgamations of some councils.
This experience stood him in good stead in the early days of the proposed amalgamation of Kiama and Shoalhaven councils. Steve was part of a small group of local union delegates and councillors who organised rallies and protests against the amalgamation. With this leadership, the people of Kiama came out in protest and so Kiama remains a stand-alone council.
Steve has developed strong links with various parts of the community from workers to sportsmen (and women). He played over one hundred games of Rugby Union representing Kiama, as well as playing touch football, basketball. Now he is an active member of Kiama Bowling Club and enjoys fishing, kayaking, walking, swimming and golf.
Steve has been married to Vicki for thirty-six years and they have one son, James.
