Abandoned car causes concernThe abandoned car is on the right

Update 1 Dec: the car has been moved

A vehicle abandoned in a dangerous spot at Kiama Heights is stuck in limbo as Council and NSW Police wait on each other for its removal.

Travelling south on South Kiama Drive, the vehicle has been blocking the left-hand lane as it merges into the right for three days.

With blue and white tape on the car’s towbar, NSW Police have said they are waiting on Council to remove the car.

But with a process to follow, Council says they must wait for NSW Police to remove the licence plates before they are able to arrange to have the vehicle removed under the Public Spaces (unattended property) Act 2021.

Left at what seems to be a standstill, local Sandy Rendel says it is a disaster waiting to happen.

“You accelerate up the hill around the cove and you get directions to merge from two lanes into one but suddenly you’re confronted by this dark coloured car occupying the whole lane.

“If you have three cars coming up together, some in the left lane and some in the right lane, and they're meant to merge but there is a stationary car in front of them, it could cause a serious accident, especially in heavy traffic, at night or in rain.

“While they are working out who is responsible, they could put signs out to mark that the lane is closed because if they did that at the bottom of the hill, it would be a real safety solution,” Sandy says.
