Big weekend for emergency services in Kiama

The 19-20th August marked a big weekend for emergency services in the Kiama LGA, with multiple incidents occurring simultaneously as holidaymakers made their way back up the coast.

Kiama Leagues Club was the hottest place to be in Kiama on Sunday afternoon, literally!

A small fire broke out at the club on Terralong Street at approximately 3:30pm on Sunday afternoon, emanating from a rogue clothes dryer in the basement

Thankfully no-one was injured, and the club was evacuated immediately due to smoke, staying closed overnight. Kiama Leagues Club has since reopened with normal trading resuming on Monday morning.

Members of the Rural Fire Services and ambulances attended the scene at around 4:30pm who extinguished the small blaze.

On the other side of town, police attended a medical emergency just south of the Gerringong Bends in which a cyclist unfortunately died. No other vehicles were involved, however.

The incident was reported at approximately 1:45pm on Sunday afternoon. Police closed one lane for hours, causing northbound traffic to slow to a crawl during the operation.

The Bugle understands the victim was a well-known local who regularly rode from Gerringong to Shellharbour with many shopping bags on his bike.

Meantime with transport woes buses replaced service between Bomaderry, Kiama and Wollongong this morning from 3.50 am to 9.50 am due to track work.

Service may be less frequent between Port Kembla, Wollongong and Waterfall says Transport NSW due to a train at Thirroul needing urgent repairs.

Some trains may have additional stops between Wollongong and Waterfall and trips may take longer than usual.

A bus service has been arranged between Wollongong and Port Kembla in both directions.

The Bugle will keep you updated of any major traffic disruptions and emergency alerts in our local area - as of 9 am NSW TrainLink South has told the Bugle trains are running as normal between Kiama and Bomaderry but there may be 15 minute delays between Kiama and Wollongong due to urgent train repairs.

The Bugle will update this article as more details are shared.
