150 swimmers took on the impressive 1.8km course around the headland from Gerringong Boat Harbour to Werri Beach in the Captain Christie Ocean Swim yesterday, the first time the event has been held in March rather than January.
Coordinator of the event for the Surf Club, Mitch Payne, says it was a successful change, “The weather and water were warm which was great, although it was a bit bumpy out there for the swimmers.
“It was a tough swim around the rocks, but it always is. It all worked out well and we’re happy with how everything went. We have received some good feedback so far.”
The first local to complete the historic swim was a familiar face, 15 year Wyland Hall, who won the Werri Warrior competition earlier in the year.
He finished in 10th place after a 28 minute swim, just 6 minutes behind the winner, Stuart Swinburn from Randwick.
“Thank you to everyone who supported the swim, especially Natural Necessity who provided the winning prizes,” Mitch says.
