EPA Investigates Debris Balls Found on NSW Beaches

The NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA) is actively investigating the source of debris balls that washed up on beaches, including Kiama’s Bombo Beach in December 2024. The exact origin remains undetermined, but the EPA is considering multiple possibilities.

Authorities are examining both land-based sources - such as Sydney Water’s sewerage and stormwater systems - and sea-borne sources, including cruise ships or other vessels. The EPA is also conducting debris sampling and advising local councils on safe management and disposal.

What to Do if You Find Debris Balls

If you spot debris balls or any suspicious material on the beach, do not touch them. Instead, report them immediately to your local council or call the EPA Environment Line at 131 555.

Kiama Council is responsible for any beach closure decisions, but the EPA provides guidance on cleanup and disposal.
