The Kiama Farmers’ Market has been cancelled for this afternoon due to high winds. The market was originally going to move indoors to the Uniting Church next to its usual location at Surf Beach.
However, the wind gusts have been so strong that branches from the surrounding Norfolk pines have broken off or become a potential danger.
The Farmer’s Market manager Tricia Ashelford said the cancellation was extremely disappointing but public safety made it a necessity.
“A large branch from the Norfolk Pine tree was blown down and there are other branches hanging,” Ashelford said. “This extremely high wind could potentially cause the branches to come down and cause injury. Better to be safe rather than sorry!”
The State Emergency Service has been called to help remove the branches.
After a long, cold winter the markets will adjust along with daylight saving on 9 October, from 2-5pm to 3-6pm each Wednesday.
“It’s always a challenge running the market during the winter,” said Ashelford. “We are looking forward to warmer days and more sunshine. People can stay longer, and the kids can play or go for a swim after school. The public can enjoy live music.”
Kiama Farmers’ Market is one of the most enjoyed aspects of life in the region. Everyone has their favourite stalls.
Here at The Bugle, we particularly like the organic fruit and vegetables, with several stalls selling high-quality produce, the homemade bread stall, literally the best bread this author has ever tried, the lemonade van, with its excellent product reminiscent of the carnivals of old, and in this weather, it’s tempting to stop by the South Coast Brewery stall for a tipple. We recommend the Illawarra Plum Gin.
Our staff are also keen on the Lanlan Shanghai Dumplings, which are always a generous serve, the All Natural Dog Treats, the truly excellent food from the Artisan Delish Salami, the Pines Gelato, made from local milk and the Enokido Miso stall.
That’s just for starters. Find your own favourites. Unfortunately, you’ll have to wait till next week now.
