Fillmores given short term reprieveMorgan Lewis at the entrance to Fillmores

Fillmores is able to continue hosting music, at least for the short term, after a meeting between its owner Morgan Lewis, Kiama Council CEO Jane Stroud and Director of Environmental Planning Jessica Rippon [Fillmores closed by Council: fears for Jazz & Blues fest]

Mr Lewis has told The Bugle that the imposition of the Development Control Order has been postponed until 30 April to allow Council to seek legal advice, after what he describes as a ‘cathartic’ meeting.

“It comes down to a difference in the interpretation of the rules and Council now understands our take, which is supported by the people from the Live Music Office who wrote the rules,” he says.

“This issue is being watched closely by APRA and other councils, as it has implications for other cafes.”

The long meeting allowed for a full and frank exchange of views, and Mr Lewis is looking forward to continuing to work with Council to find a solution. Until then he is allowed to operate as usual, including hosting seven gigs during the Kiama Jazz & Blues Festival, on next weekend.

“The great news is that the Festival is no longer under a cloud, and Council is getting right behind it to ensure its success,” he says.

“They are 110 per cent supportive, and it is going to be a great weekend.”
