Today marks International Day of People with Disability (IDPwD), a United Nations initiative aimed at raising awareness, understanding, and acceptance of people with disabilities. Member for Kiama Gareth Ward urged the local community to support the day and its message.
“Recognised globally on 3rd December, IDPwD is an opportunity to amplify understanding and foster inclusion for people with disabilities,” Mr. Ward said.
The theme for 2024, Amplifying the Leadership of Persons with Disabilities for an Inclusive and Sustainable Future, underscores the importance of empowering individuals with disabilities as leaders and advocates in their communities.
“I encourage residents, community groups, and local organisations across our region to participate in this year’s IDPwD,” said Mr. Ward. “As a former NSW Minister for Disabilities, I understand the power of collective action to challenge perceptions, remove barriers, and promote inclusive and respectful attitudes and behaviours in our communities.”
He also encouraged people to share their stories or initiatives using the hashtag #IDPwD.
Resources and further information about IDPwD can be found on the official website.
