Kiama residents are encouraged to wear something orange on Wednesday, 22 May, in recognition of the hardworking volunteers of the NSW State Emergency Services (SES).
This national day of appreciation is called ‘Wear Orange Wednesday” (WOW Day), and is an annual part of National Volunteer Week (20 - 26 May).
Kiama MP Gareth Ward highlights how challenging the past few years have been for NSW SES volunteers. They have been instrumental in responding to emergencies, most recently storms, heavy rains and flooding, which caused extensive damage to the region.
“WOW Day is an easy way for people to show their support for local volunteers, including our local SES personnel across the Illawarra, Kiama and Shoalhaven,” says Ward.
NSW SES volunteers play a vital role in helping communities prepare for, and recover from severe weather events. Ward stresses how, “extremely important it is that these individuals are recognised for their outstanding work, professionalism and dedication.”
There are several ways in which to show your support, including wearing orange and encouraging others to do the same, hosting morning teas to recognise SES volunteers, and to share videos or photos with #ThankyouSES as the hashtag. You can also present any volunteers in your workplace with a Certificate of Appreciation.
