Rubber ducks are again up for adoption to compete in the Gerringong Men’s Shed Duck Derby at the end of the year.
The annual Derby is returning to Gerroa for another day filled with community fun and entertainment with a BBQ, Pete’s lucky duck wheel and two duck races, and the owners of the winning ducks taking home $500.
Men’s Shed member Ken Harris brought the Derby to the area in 2016 after seeing the popular event unfold across the world.
It now stands as one of the Shed’s biggest fundraising events of the year, bringing in an average of $4,000.
“The money helps the Shed purchase much-needed equipment and fund improvements to our facilities that seek to promote men’s mental health and wellbeing,” says Ken.
“We try to put whatever we can back into the community by helping people.”
Each year the event is a popular affair with tourists from two nearby caravan parks joining in, according to Ken.
“It’s a fun day with a good, holiday atmosphere and people smiling everywhere. It’s more for the kids and for the community than it is for us.”
Ownership of the ducks for the race is just $5. They are available at Gerringong IGA on Mondays and Wednesdays or on the day.
