Councillor Matt Brown, who is again to chair the Destination Kiama Tourism Advisory Committee, is encouraging people with relevant experience and interest to apply to join the committee.

“We are looking for people with the experience and passion for getting the balance right between supporting tourism and looking after the local community,” he says.

“They don’t have to be directly involved in the tourism industry locally, although it would be great to get the views of operators and investors expressed in our discussions.

“I’m also really keen to get some of our younger people involved, so all voices are heard.”

The Tourism Advisory Committee is one of five Council committees still in action, following Council’s decision to bring more uniform structure to its wide variety of committees and advisory groups.

The expressions of interest are being called for under draft terms of reference, which will see the Advisory Committee made up of four industry representatives, two councillors (Matt Brown and Warren Steel), Council’s CEO and a representative from the Kiama & District Business Chamber. The term is until 30 June 2024, when half of the community representative places will fall vacant and be readvertised.

Cllr Brown says amongst the first things the Committee will discuss is whether to commit to this year’s NYE fireworks, and whether to make IGNITE an annual event.

“IGNITE has been a raging success, and we need to work out how we can build on it.

“It has been great to see so many happy faces.”

The IGNITE ice rink at Blowhole Point is open until 13 June

The new Committee will also have the opportunity to consider and make recommendations on the Draft Tourism Strategy, which has recently been on exhibition, before it is endorsed by Council.

Cllr Brown says that agri-tourism will play an increasingly important role in attracting visitors to the area.

“There have already been a number of new investments in agri-tourism, and the new planning changes will mean much more growth in this sector.

“It is a great way to keep our green rolling hills, while providing extra income for farmers and more accommodation offerings.”

Applications can be made online, and close 4pm, Wednesday 15 June.
