Kiama is facing a critical question that has our community divided: “Do we acknowledge the reality of a growing population and the need for diverse housing, or do we continue to resist, saying, "Not in my backyard"? This resistance could mean that our children, essential workers, and future generations may be priced out of living here.
Top economists are unanimous—Australia’s housing market is in crisis. Among a panel of experts, not one supports the idea of doing nothing. Instead, the focus is on real solutions, planning reforms, and easing restrictions to create more affordable housing options.
Here in Kiama, this debate is already costing us. Our rates are being drained, with millions spent over the last few years on legal battles and planning disputes. This isn't sustainable, and it's crucial that we elect councillors who understand the gravity of the situation and are committed to being solution focused.
Our housing needs are evolving. With more people living alone, couples without children, and diverse family structures, the demand for varied housing is increasing. If we refuse to adapt, we risk losing the very people who make Kiama vibrant - our young people, essential workers, and long-standing families.
The choice is clear: we need councillors who can navigate these challenges, prioritise sustainable solutions, and ensure that Kiama remains a community for everyone. It’s time to look beyond the fear of change and focus on electing leaders who can guide us through these complex issues, without further draining our resources on endless disputes. The future of Kiama depends on it.
Some questions you can ask the candidates and what you can look for in their answers to cut through the noise and help you sort out the big picture leaders from the small issues fixers
Effective candidates will articulate a clear vision with measurable goals for sustainable growth and housing. They should provide specific targets and timelines, reflecting a deep understanding of the balance between development and community impact.
Effective candidates will present specific policies or programs aimed at improving housing affordability and supporting diverse housing needs. They should be able to explain how their plans will help lower housing costs and increase access to affordable housing for all residents.
