It has taken all week to set up, and two days for the ice to set, but Kiama now has an ice skating rink to enjoy for 10 days from tonight.
The 24m x 15m (4 inch deep) rink has been set up on one of the Blowhole Point tennis courts, and will be officially opened tonight at 5pm by Mayor Neil Reilly, after a Welcome to Country by Aunty Joyce Donovan. A welcoming sea of lights on the avenue of Norfolks leading up to the Point will also be switched on.
The Chair of Destination Kiama, Councillor Matt Brown says the idea is to welcome winter.
“Kiama is joining other cities and towns around the world in turning a time traditionally for hibernation into a fiery community celebration,” he says.

“We’ve already had an incredible autumn with REVEL in May. Now we’re welcoming in winter with a free festival of fire, arts, culture, food, drink and live entertainment capped by a fireworks grand finale.
“Bring your family and friends to our beautiful Blowhole Point for what is going to be a truly memorable experience.”

Those coming to tonight's opening will also be able to mingle in an enormous teepee bar, enjoying food from Hungry Monkey and drinks from Henry Clive; or watch the skating while dining at Diggies.
