To the relief of residents, commuters and tourists, it is once again possible to access Robertson and the Southern Highlands via Jamberoo Mountain Road.
Heavy rainfall at the end of July significantly damaged the road structure across both lanes, leading to funding for the repairs from the Federal Government’s Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements.
Kiama Council’s Director Engineering and Works, Mike Dowd, said contractors had been able to work quickly during dry weather to repair the damaged road.
“The team was able to install the new piled retaining wall, enlarged box culverts and resurface the damaged area in a relatively short amount of time considering the challenges of the job,” Mr Dowd said.
“While the road is open I urge motorists to drive carefully, as the line marking has been delayed by recent rain.”
Mayor Mark Honey has thanked Council staff and contractors for their efforts to have Jamberoo Mountain Road re-opened as scheduled.
“Given the scale of the damage done to the road, the steep terrain, and small area to work in, I’m amazed by what they’ve achieved,” Clr Honey said.
“I also want to thank the NSW and Australian governments for their funding and logistical support getting the road repaired.”
NSW Public Works Advisory also provided assistance with design and project management.
