Kiama area recovering after the floods

Two flood recovery centres will be established in the Illawarra by the end of this week to help flood-affected residents get back on their feet. Many people were impacted heavily by the extreme weather conditions over the weekend.

Regional teams from the NSW Reconstruction Authority are on the ground in the region, liaising with local councils and emergency services to manage the transition to recovery.

Partner organisations such as the Red Cross, mental health support services as well as Service NSW are also set to be deployed to the local area.

The Council is helping by waiving the gate fee for flood-damaged green waste at Minnamurra Waste and Recycling Centre. Dunmore Recycling and Waste Depot in Shellharbour is accepting flood-damaged general waste and Kiama Council is covering the gate fee until 21 April 2024.

Residents simply need to provide their rates notice when disposing of their flood-related waste at Minnamurra and Dunmore.

Disaster funding is available for residents in the Kiama LGA who have been impacted.

The NSW government website has a lot of information about what to do if you have been affected by the flooding and recent torrential weather.

Authorities remind people to not drive, walk, or ride through flood waters. Please assess water quality before swimming at the beach, it is recommended to wait for three days after heavy rain before swimming to allow for pollutants or other risks to disperse.
