Kiama beach patrol returns for swimming season

Lifeguards and volunteer lifesavers will resume beach patrols in the Kiama LGA just in time for the beginning of the school holidays on 23 September. Some beaches like Surf Beach will be patrolled seven days a week, while others like Jones and Werri Beaches will only be patrolled on weekends, so we’ve included the full schedule below.

Weekday patrols for Surf Beach will be conducted by dedicated lifesavers starting at 10am and concluding at 5:30pm, and weekend patrols will be staffed by volunteers from 10am until 4pm.

Emergency Relay Beacons (ERBs) were introduced last year and placed at known drowning black spots to help lifeguards when dealing with drowning incidents.. Using a camera, they allow responders to assess the situation if activated by a distracted swimmer.

SMART drumlines and drones will also be used to detect and relocate target sharks for the safety of swimmers.

Patrols will increase on 19 December as Summer lifeguards begin working.
