Kiama Council's Oversight Raises ConcernsAsbestos worker on site

The management of community resources by the Kiama Council has raised concerns amid the construction of a new facility for the Gerringong Community and Surf Club.

Tonight's 5 pm Public Access meeting provides an avenue for residents to voice their apprehensions directly. Will they give the Club the funding? Perhaps. But, at what cost to the community…

A staggering $470,000 shortfall in the project budget, compounded by the discovery of asbestos, highlights significant financial mismanagement. Alarmingly, the allocated contingency fund represents only 1 percent of the total project cost, falling short of the standard 5-10 percent.

The Council's failure to explore alternative building quotes raises questions about their diligence and fiscal responsibility. With prior scrutiny from the State Government for financial mismanagement, residents fear the prospect of further asset sales or steep rate hikes to address the situation.

Ahead of the September Council elections, resident engagement is crucial to advocate for transparency and accountability. Tonight's meeting offers an opportunity to safeguard the community's long-term interests amidst these pressing concerns.

Update: Concerned community. Overflow at council meeting this afternoon !
