Kiama MP calls to reverse Jamberoo Road speed limit

State MP for Kiama Gareth Ward has launched a petition to reverse speed limits on Jamberoo Road back to 80 km/h.

Transport for NSW announced the speed limit would be reduced from 70 or 80 km/h to 60 km/h in September to improve the safety of motorists and make the road a safer place for cyclists and pedestrians.

Ward has said he has been inundated with negative feedback on the new limits by Jamberoo residents and believes the reduction won’t improve safety.

“Simply lowering the speed limit will not address offending drivers, particularly tourists and motorcyclists. The road requires better maintenance and significant improvements.”

The petition calls for additional road works and maintenance, a review on overtaking options, vegetation removal and an increased police presence which the Kiama MP believes will tackle the safety issues more appropriately.

“I am also concerned that this change will result in more locals getting fined on their daily commute and that scenario just simply isn’t good enough.”

The reduced speed limit will come into effect on Jamberoo Road 8 October and will increase travel time along the seven kilometre road by one minute and 39 seconds.

Residents in Minnamurra will have already seen a reduction in speed along Riverside Drive which came into effect on 30 September.
