The ALP’s Katelin McInerney is ahead in Kiama after last night’s count, but neither candidate is calling it given the amount of votes still to be counted.
“It is too close to call,” says the Sitting Member, Gareth Ward.
Ms McInerney agrees, saying, “We probably won’t know for a few days or weeks. But what we can see is that the community wants change.”
The ABC is showing a 13.9 per cent swing on preferences to Ms McInerney, but there are many more votes to be counted – the electorate has 56298 votes, and just 24,841 have been counted.
In particular, the large prepoll vote in Kiama and Nowra was not counted last night. Statewide, prepolling was up 120 per cent on the last state election.
Mr Ward is currently winning on first preferences, with 38.2 per cent of the vote, ahead of Ms McInerney’s 34.3 per cent.
Counting will resume on Monday.
