Kiama Surf Life Saving Club raises thousands to save roof

The Kiama Community has turned out in droves to help the Kiama Surf Life Saving Club raise funds to repair its roof that was damaged during heavy storms over Christmas.

Throughout late December, wild thunderstorms hit the South Coast, including Kiama, which caused damage in excess of $150,000 to the Kiama SLSC clubhouse on Surf Beach, including damage to the roof that has made the building unsafe.

Quotes to fix the roof alone run upwards of $70,000. Kiama SLSC has applied for a grant from Surf Living Saving NSW, but needs to raise $30,000 as a co-contributor for the application to be successful.

Thanks to the community, Kiama SLSC is already more than halfway to its goal following a successful raffle that has raised more than $15,000 so far.

Businesses across the Kiama LGA donated prizes for the raffle, including the grand prize of a reef fishing charter for 10 people valued at $1600, courtesy of Kiama Blue Water Charters. Raffle winners were drawn during the Kiama NYE Fireworks festivities.

Other prizes included a two-night stay in a luxury Safari tent from Cicada Luxury Camping, a Sundeck event hire package from Kiama SLSC and a room for a one-night stay at the Sebel Kiama.

Kiama SLSC Club President Phil Perry said the club was overwhelmed by the community support from locals, businesses and even tourists who bought raffle tickets when they visited on New Year's Eve. Phil also wants to thank Kiama Council for all of its support, as well as Gilmore MP Fiona Phillips and Member for Kiama Gareth Ward.
