The next stage of the Kiama Village Redevelopment, now owned by the Woolworths Group, was recently unveiled, but not without valid concerns and critiques from the community.
‘A safer, more accessible carpark’ was a key aim for this new development. However, the ramp connected to the 135 spots now available in the upstairs carpark has left many locals taking to social media, airing their concerns that the questionable design is an accident – or more – waiting to happen.
Primary observations regarding the ramp are regarding its narrow width and lacking centre line. Despite there being one mirror for motorists to assess upcoming conditions, the corner is relatively blind with no word of caution offered. This is of particular concern should a motorist traveling up the ramp cut across potential downward traffic to take a sharp right turn into the lower-level unsurfaced carpark. Furthermore, the ramp lacks speed bumps and speed limit signs.
Ahead of the opening of the underground carpark anticipated for May, The Woolworths Group and Kiama Council have been approached for comment to address the design and associated concerns from the community. The Bugle will continue to report on the progress of this matter.
