Local rugby league winsBringing the cup back: Coaches of Reserve Grade Superoos Matt Webster and Ben Wade (who also played his 100th game for the club that day)

It was an great day for the Jamberoo Rugby League Superoos and the Gerringong Lions yesterday, with the Reserve Grade Superoos bringing home a grand final win for the first time since 1969, and the Under 18s Gerringong Lions winning the premiership after an undefeated season.

The Superoos played the Gerringong Lions in what was a close game that ended with them winning 22 to 16.

With the Lions in striking distance in the last ten minutes, Vice President of Jamberoo Rugby Leagues Club, David Hall, says it was a stressful but good game of football.

“Gerringong was the benchmark of the competition right through, so to beat them in the grand final was very special, especially as we had come from fifth spot at the end of the season to winning the cup,” he says.

“During those last four games we played in the semi-finals, we were behind by ten in one game and twelve in two of them, but we came back and won each of them. It was a big effort from the guys to reverse scores like that.

“They showed a lot of resolve and bought the cup back to the ‘Roo after 53 years so it was really good.”

With five to six players in the winning team yesterday moving up from the Under 18s team two years ago, David says some of those young men are now potentially looking at being first graders next year.

“We will have a break now and will start training again in January next year. But for now, there is just a really good feeling in the Club,” David says.

For the Under 18s Gerringong Lions, their win against the Milton Ulladulla Bulldogs, 30 to 6, marked the end of an undefeated season.

“It was a pretty good build up and they led it all the way,” Coach John Ford says.

“They probably made a few mistakes they don’t normally make, but their defence was rock solid through that whole first half. The second half saw them play better and they defended their line well again and got over the top. We ended up winning pretty comfortably.”

With the majority of the team having been with the Club since Under 6s, and not losing a premiership since Under 10s, John says it was a good run for them but it is now the end of an era.

“They will be back next year, but they will go into grades now, with a few of them potentially heading into representative roles in lower grades NRL. We are all sad that we are splitting up but that’s what happens when teams get to that stage,” he says.

The team is having some well-deserved drinks today to celebrate their years together and their many wins.
