Local support for climate action

Tomorrow, the Kiama and South Coast chapter of the Australian Religious Response to Climate Change is joining with people of all faiths in both Australia and the Pacific in calling for action on phasing out fossil fuels.

Multifaith services are being held on that day in support of an open letter to the Prime Minister Albanese from senior faith leaders call on the Australian Government to:

  • stop approving new coal and gas projects
  • end public subsidies for coal and gas projects
  • actively participate in creating a Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty to phase out fossil fuels and support a just transition.

The campaign is part of a month of actions by communities of faith around the world as part of the lead-up to the UN’s COP 27 climate negotiations in November called Faiths 4 Climate Justice (F4CJ), calling for a Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty.

The Nowra service of the F4CJ protest is being supported by parishes from Kiama, Berry, Nowra, Milton and Batemans Bay/Moruya, with the music being led by a new arrival to Kiama, Jessica Roemischer [Another international performer calls Kiama home].

It is the latest in a series of actions taken by the local group, including campaigning for a target of cutting emissions by 50 per cent by 2030 during the Federal election.
