Markets EOI needs more work

Kiama Council has decided to go back to the drawing board and work with market operators on how best to award licences for markets at Black Beach and Coronation Park [EOI called for Black Beach and Surf Beach markets].

The original EOI has been withdrawn while further discussions are undertaken with the current long term operators. This step had been anticipated by the operators, who were caught by surprise by the issuing of the EOI, complete with unexplained independent valuations of the fee expected.

“In looking more closely at the figures, we have decided more work needs to be done to explore alternate pricing structures and methods of funding for market operators,” says Mayor Neil Reilly.

This is in line with an earlier commitment for the Mayor and CEO to meet regularly with local market operators to listen to their needs and allow them to help shape policies around markets.

“I'd prefer to take a bit more time to collaborate and get this right,” says Council’s CEO Jane Stroud.

“We have received valuations, but markets are complex and dynamic businesses and it’s important we consider suitable and flexible pricing, in consultation with both community and commercial operators.”

This is likely to include arrangements for weather events.
