The iconic Werri Beach Fish Shop is no more, with the site undergoing a major transformation and reopening as the Werri Beach Cafe.
Having bought the premises in August, Dr Tram Bui, a neurological rehabilitation specialist, is being joined in the venture by her friends Michael Huynh, expert barista, and Anna Nguyen, the chef.
The three friends come from Strathfield where they worked in the food industry for many years.
“We came here many times for beach holidays,” says Tram.
“The locals were so friendly and the area has such great views,” says Anna.
“We just wanted to come and live and work here.”
The new owners are keeping traditional beach favourites, but along with the new look will come some new additions to make it more than a fish shop.
This is signaled by the large coffee machine all ready to go, serving 88 Degree Coffee Roasters coffee.
There are also some new items on the menu, including a breakfast range of pastries, ham and cheese croissants and cheese toasties, bacon and egg rolls and freshly made spring rolls.
With Anna’s extensive experience as a chef and caterer, she says to expect to see specials such as rice paper prawn rolls added to the menu.
“Three employees of the old business operating on the site have returned so you will see some of the old faces,” says Anna, referring to locals Caitlin Murray, David Foggo and Dylan Faust.
The new management is not affiliated with the previous business.
Over summer, the cafe will be open Tuesday to Sunday, 9.30-3pm and then 4.30-6.30pm.
