The original Jamberoo Post Office that has been part of the town’s history for over 160 years has been restored and reopened as a community space again.

The restored post office, now The Jamberoo Postie Café, has been in Cameron Paterson’s family since the 1950s – some locals may remember his uncle Frank who ran the post office from 1973 after Cameron’s grandparents.

Cameron and wife Charlotte have since revived the space – which has been closed since the late 1980s when the post office relocated further up the street – and have brought a much-needed new addition to the town.

“We wanted to bring it back for the community because there are limited spaces where people can sit and chat. With the post office being a community-based facility, and with our background, we thought we would give it a shot,” says Charlotte, who has a long history working as a chef.

“It has taken years to restore because we wanted to make sure we maintain the heritage aspect of it. Aesthetically it’s done as close to the original as we can.”

Five days a week customers can enjoy freshly baked seasonal cakes, three pence roasters coffee and artisan pizza in what was the original post office room.

By mid-winter, Charlotte and Cameron plan to introduce craft beer to the menu and decorate the outdoor seating with fairy lights.

The new business opened over Easter and has received a positive response from customers.

“People are enjoying it and getting used to what we do. The community has been really supportive,” Charlotte says.

“Now it has settled down after the public and school holiday rush, I'm excited to get to know more of the locals.”

Open Wed-Sun 10-2pm and 5-7.30pm
