NSW Government boosts coastal safety with new emergency beacons

The NSW Government is enhancing beach safety with the introduction of new Emergency Response Beacons (ERBs) at Austinmer and Woonona beaches.

These advanced beacons are the first of their kind, they connect directly to Surf Life Saving NSW’s State Operations Centre, allowing for quicker responses in both the water and nearby areas. The beacons are equipped with flotation devices and powered by solar energy, providing relief to emergency response personnel in unpatrolled and remote areas.

The rollout, funded by the Minns Labor Government, follows a Coastal Water Safety Roundtable’s findings, and aims to address increased drownings at unpatrolled locations.

Other locations include Gordons Bay, Mahon Pool, Turimetta, North Palm Beach, Bateau Bay and Forresters Beach.

Minister for Emergency Services, Jihad Dib said, “The installation of new beacons is a critical step towards ensuring the safety of everyone who enjoys our beautiful coastline.”
