Pittwater MP Rory Amon resigned from both the Liberal Party and NSW Parliament on Friday afternoon just a few hours after state police charged him with 10 child sex offences.
Amon was charged with five counts of sexual intercourse with a person between the ages of 10 and 14, two counts of attempted sexual intercourse with a child and two counts of indecent assault of a person under the age of 16.
Initially receiving reports back in June 2022 of a alleged sexual assault incident taking place in Mona Vale in 2017, NSW Police have been conducting an ongoing investigation since March 2023. The 35-year-old Shadow Assistant Youth Minister was arrested at 6am on Friday August 30. Appearing in Manly Local Court on the same day, Amon was granted strict bail conditions with orders to appear again on September 18, 2024.
Opposition Leader, Mark Speakmen declared the charges extremely serious and prompted for Amon’s immediate resignation. "While Mr Amon is entitled to the presumption of innocence, a criminal trial will be some time away and in the meantime the citizens of Pittwater are entitled to have a Member of Parliament who can discharge their duties in the community fully," Mr Speakman said.
"I therefore also asked Mr Amon to resign from the New South Wales Parliament, effective immediately. He has tendered his resignation to the Speaker."
Former planning minister Rob Stokes was offered the seat of Pittwater by Liber Leader Mark Speakman but rejected the return to Parliament.
Independent Jacqui Scruby lost the seat of Pittwater during the 2023 state election by 606 votes to Mr Amon.
It is suggested that she will be expected to run in Pittwater again, taking to social media following the confronting announcement. “The resignation of Pittwater's Liberal MP is confronting news that’s left many of us in shock.” Ms Scruby said via X.
“To those asking whether I will run as an Independent again – I’m considering it, and am taking time now to hear what leadership and representation the people of Pittwater want next.”
Mr Amon has since deleted his Instagram and Facebook accounts, after the charges were made public.
