NSW Police is asking everyone to look after their friends and family this Australia Day long weekend as they roll out state-wide Operation Australia Day 2024.
Operation Australia Day 2024 will begin at midnight on Thursday 25 January and last until midnight on Monday 29 January. Double demerits will be in place, and law enforcement will retain high visibility across NSW for the duration.
Yasmin Catley, Minister of Police and Counter-Terrorism says, “Mateship, camaraderie, respect and diversity are all part of our story, and everyone has a role to play in looking out for their mates and loved ones this Australia Day.”
Authorities are urging Australians to behave in a way that reflects shared values to ensure a safe and enjoyable day for everyone.
General duties officers will join specialised forces to support the operation and ensure there are units on the ground, in the air, and on the water. These units include, Police Transport Command, Traffic and Highway Patrol Command, Public Order and Riot Squad, Operation Support Group, Mounted Unit, Dog Uni and PolAir.
Operation Australia Day Commander, Stephen Hegarty says Police NSW are working with the government to ensure a safe environment across all of Australia, “we all love a good long weekend, however, what you need to know is your limits when consuming alcohol.”
Hegarty reminds everyone to have a Plan B if they are drinking, to look after your mates and get home safely. Emergency services are on hand if you need help. Traffic and Highway Patrol Command Commander, Acting Assistant Commissioner Anthony Boyd, said “If you are planning to drink, don’t drive. Leave your car at home and catch public transport, taxis, or organise a designated driver.”
Another warning comes from Marine Area Commander, Superintendent Joe McNulty for people to check their vessel is in working order and safety equipment and life jackets are on board.
NSW Transport has increased services over the long weekend and people are encouraged to plan ahead, check traffic updates and be mindful of road closures. “Both marked and unmarked police cars will be out in force patrolling all major roads and back streets - so don’t take the risk because you will get caught,” says Anthony Boyd.
“Our message is clear: make this an Australia Day to remember, not one you’d rather forget.”
