Record attendance expected at the Australian Council of Local Government meeting

The Albanese Government is bringing councils back into the national conversation, expecting record attendance at the Australian Council of Local Government (ACLG) meeting on Friday 5 July in Canberra.

The ACLG gives local government officials the chance to engage with Cabinet Ministers on community challenges and opportunities.

To support councils, the government is advancing $2.78 billion, representing 85% of the 2024-2025 Financial Assistance Grant allocations, to be distributed before 30 June with the aim to alleviate cash flow pressures and ensure continued service delivery.

The 2024 ACLG coincides with the Australian Local Government Association’s National General Assembly (2-4 July) which will host over 750 local government representatives.

Minister for Local Government, Catherine King emphasises the importance of collaboration to address financial sustainability, workforce shortages, and natural disasters.

Regional Development minister Kristy McBain highlighted the value of councils’ expertise in driving positive changes.

Australian Local Government Association President, Linda Scott, appreciated the early grant payments, aiding councils’ budget planning and service provision.

The 2024 ACLG underscores the federal government’s commitment to vibrant, liveable communities across Australia.
