Remember Hiroshima, Remember Nagasaki - WAWAN Holds Forum in Thirroul
Today marks 79 years since the first wartime atomic bomb was used against the civilian population of Hiroshima, killing between 90,000 and 166,000 people. Three days later, on 9 August, a second bomb was dropped on Nagasaki killing another 60,000–80,000. These bombs caused total devastation to infrastructure and immense human suffering.
This year, as war and conflict spreads across the world, Wollongong Against War and Nukes (WAWAN) has organised a forum to remember the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and examine the growing nuclear threats we are facing today. WAWAN say, “Australia is once more contemplating further expansion of uranium mining and the development of nuclear energy under a possible Coalition government.”
“The AUKUS nuclear-powered submarines bring with them the threat that Australia will become a dumping ground for military nuclear waste from our AUKUS partners.”
The forum will hear from Greens Senator David Shoebridge, ICAN Australia Director Gem Romuld, Nuclear Free and Independent Pacific movement veteran Vanessa Griffen, and South Coast Labour Council Secretary Arthur Rorris. It will be held at Thirroul Neighbourhood Centre and Library at 1pm on Sunday 11 August.
This Hiroshima Day WAWAN urges the government and opposition: ‘Don’t Nuke the Future’.
