Following ten deaths on NSW roads recorded in just one weekend, the shadow minister, Mr. Paul Toole urges drivers to take responsibility on the roads this holiday season to ensure everyone makes it to their destinations safely.
The NSW Police Force will begin their holiday operation this week with double demerits coming into effect from Friday 22nd of December 2023. The holiday period is traditionally the busiest time of the year on NSW roads and police say they will be out in force. Traffic and Highway Patrol Command officers will work together with local police to target all road-related offences, including drink and drug driving, distractions, fatigue, and other dangerous behaviours that risk road users’ safety.
Mr. Toole said, “The most important gift you can give this festive season is being responsible. Be the motorist who obeys the road rules and drives to the conditions, not the motorist who drives recklessly and kills someone.” The NSW Road toll for 2023 is currently at 344 which is 77 more than the same time last year. Toole said, “What’s worse than getting a fine in the mail or losing your license is being the reason a family has an empty chair at their table this Christmas” and urged drivers to do the right thing when they are behind the wheel.
Matthew Irvine, the PCYC NSW Driver Education Specialist also reminded road users to be aware of an increased number of learner drivers during the school holidays, and asked drivers to be patient and give learners the space they need to practice safe driving, "lead by example and show them what respectful and responsible driving looks like."
If you are getting behind the wheel this Christmas period, even if it’s a short trip never drive if you’re tired, buckle up, stay under the speed limit, and put the phone away. Have a Plan B in place before your first drink and never drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
