Minnamurra residents are disappointed by the theft of a large wooden sculpture from their community-built and cared for garden, on land just east of the railway line.
We reported on the garden last year, when residents told us of the joy and connection the greening of the area gave to the whole community.
The garden has a great charm, with garden ‘rooms’ or themes, quirky sculptures, play areas and even a table of knowledge.
“Last year when he was leaving the area, Greg Eager donated his sculpture of a hand that he had carved with a chainsaw 30 years ago,” says Lynne Dron, who looks after the northern end of the Railway Ave garden.
“My husband spent hours fixing it up and then glued it to a rock.
“People loved it.
“It was a real attraction, kids loved having their photos taken on it.”
Then on Monday 27 September, between noon and 2.30pm, the sculpture was stolen from its location, opposite Boyd St.
“A lot of people are saying they can’t believe someone would do something like that,” says Lynne.
“It is 70cm high and wide, and very heavy.
“It is so shocking that someone would steal it.”
