A woman suffered a suspected broken leg and had to be rescued after slipping on rocks at Kiama Blowhole during wild weather.
SES attending to emergency
The Kiama SES Unit led the challenging rescue operation on Friday night after the woman slipped on rocks near the famous sightseeing destination. It is believed she was outside the designated viewing area when she fell, prompting emergency services to remind people of the dangers of the ocean, rivers and creeks in the area, particularly during severe storms.
Kiama SES Volunteers were the first responders to the incident and found the injured woman and her daughter near the viewing platform at Blowhole Point.
“Both were being impacted by wash from the ocean and blowhole, with 4m-high waves hitting the rocks immediately behind them,” says Southern Illawarra Commander John Wall.
Mr Wall said he was surprised to see people walking outside the safety fence in such dangerous conditions.
“Even members of our rescue team struggled to stay standing as we were buffeted by wind gusts approaching 90 km/h and the wash from massive waves,” he says.
Mr Wall reminded the public to avoid sightseeing and camping near water or under trees during severe weather.
