Speaker launches National Youth Parliament

Students with a passion for politics can now be selected for a National Youth Parliament.

Up to 150 high school students will be selected to represent their electorate in the three-day program, held in Canberra next year.

The National Youth Parliament, launched by speaker of the House of Representatives Milton Dick, will teach students about the drafting, consideration and passing of bills to become law. It complements the Parliament in Schools civics education program delivered to over 145 schools across the nation.

“The National Youth Parliament will give our young people a national platform to contribute to democracy and politics through a hands-on experience,” says Mr Dick.

“Young people have a vital role to play in public discussion, and a youth parliament is a meaningful and sustained youth engagement model that we have seen across Australia and the Commonwealth.”

The National Youth Parliament will begin taking applications in the second half of this year.
