Summer heat has arrived in Kiama and that means ice cream! Saturday 13 January 2024 saw Kiama’s streets full of visitors. The temperature in Kiama reached an ambient 29 degrees with humidity reaching 645z.
The Kiama Summer tourist season is definitely in full swing!
The beaches are thronged, the caravan parks are full and down Terralong Street, the search is on for what everyone wants on a hot summer day….
Ice Cream!
Summer means icecream in Kiama for Canberra visitors
Kiama Ice Creamery at 106 Terralong Street had queues out the door this past balmy Saturday afternoon and is staying open until 9:30 pm over Summer.
Kiama Cafe and Scoops at 60 Terralong St (basically at the other end of the main shopping block in Kiama opposite Hindmarsh Park) also had busy queues.
The Bugle spoke to one happy family visiting from Canberra, the Alis, who were happy to cool down and enjoy some ice cream in Kiama from Scoops as part of their visit.
ACT Citizen of theYear enjoying icecream in Kiama with family
Mohammed Ali told the Bugle:
'My family is having a wonderful time, you are blessed to live here compared to Canberra.”
Mohammed Ali is the former ACT Citizen of the Year for 2022 and runs the charity HelpingACT. Mr Ali Is a Pakistani migrant and retired biochemist who started HelpingACT in 2018 to provide food security to Canberra residents, particularly homeless people, refugees, asylum seekers and international students.
In 2021 the Governor General personally commended HelpingACT for their work.
Other ice cream options include the ‘Creative Refreshment’ ice cream van that parks most days for a few hours in the Kiama Blowhole car park.
An interesting and unusual option to cool down with a cold snack are the Brothsicles available at Top Shop at 162 Manning Street.
These are dairy free organic and non fattening iceblocks made with beef broth (yes beef broth) in four flavours, raw cacao, mango, raw cacao and mint, and mixed berry.
Of course stay hydrated during the heat of the day! There is a free water drink refill station outside the Old Fire Station Gallery in Terralong street and most beaches have a water bottle refill tap.
