Teenager charged for break-in and police pursuit in the Illawarra

A 16-year-old boy appeared in court yesterday following an alleged break, leading Wollongong Police on a pursuit through Unanderra yesterday.

Police noticed the boy driving a Toyota Corolla dangerously while patrolling the M1 near Unanderra on the morning of 3 January 2024. The vehicle, suspected to be stolen from a home in Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs, failed to stop when asked, prompting police to pursue the vehicle. The pursuit was terminated on Five Island Road at Unanderra due to safety concerns.

The Toyota lost control shortly after and collided with another vehicle at the intersection of the Princes Highway and Nudjia, leaving a 78-year-old man with leg injuries.

The teenager was then detained by members of the public in a nearby car park until police arrived and arrested the boy, who was charged with aggravated break and enter and commit serious indictable offences.

He appeared in children’s court yesterday where he was refused bail. He is required to return to children’s court on Tuesday 9 January, 2024.
