Emergency services responded to a devastating incident this morning at Werri Beach, Gerringong, after a 66-year-old woman was found unresponsive in the water.
The call for assistance came at approximately 9.10am, with reports of the woman being pulled unconscious from the surf in an unpatrolled area of the beach. Members of the public, along with volunteers from the local surf club, immediately commenced CPR in a desperate effort to save her life. NSW Ambulance paramedics arrived soon after to continue resuscitation efforts.
Despite the combined efforts of bystanders and emergency responders, the woman could not be revived and was pronounced deceased at the scene. Officers from the Lake Illawarra Police District are preparing a report for the Coroner.
This tragic event highlights the inherent risks of swimming in unpatrolled areas. The community is urged to take extra care during the busy summer period by swimming at patrolled beaches and remaining vigilant near the water.
The thoughts of the local community are with the woman’s family and friends during this incredibly difficult time.
