Use NAIDOC Week to find out more

NAIDOC Week is being marked in Kiama with a group of Indigenous artists from the Illawarra welcoming people down to their exhibition at the Old Fire Station to find out more about their culture.

Gundungurra Country Holder of Knowledge and Kiama Council’s former Aboriginal Liaison Officer, Trish Levett, is one of the artists whose work is on display.

She says this NAIDOC Week’s theme is about getting people together in unity to show up for Indigenous Australians.

“We’re constantly fighting for protection of our land, we need our mob and we other people to get up, stand up and actually show up.

“One of my passions is protecting sacred sites and we can’t do that alone but through all of us together in unity.

“We’re sharing our culture during NAIDOC and so get up, stand up and meet us.

“Be a part of our celebration and learn our culture.”

The exhibition will run from tomorrow (8 July), with an opening celebration at 6pm, until Wednesday 13 July. Daisy the Cow will also be painted for NAIDOC over the weekend.

“There’s lots of stories here in this gallery and the artists can explain what their artworks are about,” says Trish who now works as a trauma counsellor at Illawarra Aboriginal Medical Service.

“That’s what we’re about: sharing our knowledge, our culture and educating the community.

“So don’t be afraid to ask questions regarding the paintings or the artists when you come down.”
