Kiama Central Precinct has organised two community workshops to discuss the Planning Proposal to rezone rural land on the southern side of Kiama for housing and develop a detailed community response.
"This will be the opportunity to have your say and refine your ideas regarding this proposal," says Central Precinct Chair, Mark Greaves.
"There are many issues to consider, as the proposal could result in 600 plus new dwellings.
"In particular, we will be looking at future housing needs of Kiama and the rezoning of rural land, transport and traffic issues, impact on local schools, infrastructure requirements, environmental and heritage impacts, and the decision making process for this proposal.
"Every opinion will be taken into account.
"We are not anti-development. We just want appropriate development that complies with the various policies."
He advises attendees to read the over 30 relevant reports published on the council website before the workshops, so they can contribute in an informed way.
"We aren't planning professionals, but the weight of reasoned public opinion will be important in determining the Minister's decision on this," says Mark.
It is the first time that a submission from the Precinct has benefited from such workshops, that are open to all interested residents.
The results of the workshops will be published, to help inform individual submissions.
"The more individual submissions the better," says Mark.
The deadline for submissions has been extended until 31 May.
Workshops are to be held on Tuesday 11 May, at 2.30pm and 6.30pm, in the Saddleback Room, on the ground floor of the Kiama Pavilion.
