World Sight Day – 12 October

World Sight Day, observed on October 12, serves as a poignant reminder of the crucial role vision plays in our daily lives. From enabling us to navigate our surroundings to fostering connections through eye contact, our eyes are invaluable. This day emphasises the significance of preserving our vision and ensuring that everyone, regardless of their circumstances, has access to essential eye care.

World Sight Day, established by the Lions Club Foundation in 1984 and later joined by the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB), is a global initiative dedicated to raising awareness about blindness and vision impairment.

How to Celebrate World Sight Day:

  • Prioritise your eye health: get a vision check. Set up an appointment with an eye care specialist for everyone in the family.
  • Make a donation for vision and eye care. Some charitable organisations to consider are:
  • Helen Keller International, Foundation Fighting Blindness, National Federation of the Blind, The Seva Foundation.
  • Additional ways that you can participate include activities such as tree planting and submitting photographs online that will be used to create an international photograph montage focusing on the theme of blindness.
