Youth Week began in 1989 as a NSW Government initiative and has since become a nationwide celebration. Gareth Ward MP highlights the event’s focus on young people’s involvement in shaping their communities and addressing issues that matter to them.
This year’s theme is “Express. Empower. Get Loud!” in the hopes of encouraging young people to showcase their talents, voice their opinions and participate in local community events.
John Larkins from Kiama Lions advocates for getting involved with Young Leo’s. Youth can also have a voice in volunteering in various areas in the community and getting involved.
“As somebody who myself participated in Youth Parliament, I have always believed that the role of today’s leaders is to create future leaders,” says Gareth, emphasising the need to encourage the young people in our area to take an active role in the future of their communities.
Throughout Youth Week there will be several youth-led activities that are designed to increase participation, overcome barriers, and strengthen connections to communities. These initiatives provide opportunities for skill-building and foster a sense of recognition and belonging among young people.
As Youth Week unfolds, it serves as a vibrant celebration of the contribution and potential of young people in shaping the present and future of our society.
