Alex Glover, a teacher’s aide from Kiama, left the Kiama Bowhole on his epic quest to walk around Australia for Stride Against Suicide at 10am on Sunday 21 January 2024.
Strides Against Suicide is an unsupported walk around Australia in support of men’s mental health and suicide prevention. The journey will be at least 17,500 kilometres. Alex’s basic goal is to walk 50 kilometres every day, weather and other circumstances permitting.
Alex is trying to install slowness and simplicity in people’s lives, to wait one more minute, one more step.
The very first stride began at 10am sharp and Alex was accompanied on his start by the Kiama Pipe Band and a large number of well wishers who walked with him on the very first stage, on the loop around the Kiama Blowhole Headland.
Veronica Bardsley of The Bugle was able to speak to Alex Gover at the Kiama Blowhole just before he left. You can watch the video here Kiama Bugle Video Strides Against Suicide. Produced by Steven White.
Alex is a member of the Kiama Pipes Band, who gave him a rousing send off as he took his first strides on his epic journey.
Alex said the ethos behind his walk is, "wait one more minute, take one more step", while spreading awareness about the importance of simplicity and slowness in our lives.
A quote from his Instagram states: “You can simply choose how you want to thrive in the ambiguity of existence. Don’t simply remain a cog in a wheel if that doesn't allow you to thrive or to be you.”
