Tomorrow's Twilight Market at Black Beach, organised by the Kiama & District Business Chamber, isn't aiming to attract the large crowds usually drawn there by the NYE fireworks or even the monthly Seaside Market.
"It's giving people the option to come out, have a picnic, listen to some music and treat the kids to some rides," says Chamber Board Member, Cathy Lyall.
"We aren't creating areas where people will gather to watch a single thing. We have so much space down there to spread things out, and people will choose activities to go to.
"Everyone should be home well in time to watch the nine o'clock fireworks."
There will be 50 stalls (compared to the Seaside Market's usual 180), eight food trucks spread along the Black Beach promenade, and a regionally-based carnival operator offering rides for the children at the pool end of School Flats.
"It is very much focused on children, food, and enjoying the outdoor atmosphere on the last day of the year," says Ms Lyall.
"We don't expect there to be a big crowd there at the end."
There will be the normal COVID check-in stations, and a COVID Marshall to oversee activities.
The Kiama fireworks were cancelled earlier in the year, when requirements for holding such an event were still unclear and the risks judged too high. Instead, the focus has shifted to Destination Kiama promoting a month of diverse activities in May.
NYE fireworks are being held in Berry, Shellharbour and Wollongong. The ones in Shoalhaven Heads have been postponed until the Queens Birthday Weekend, out of concern for nesting endangered shorebirds which so far have enjoyed an unusually successful breeding season.
The Twilight Market will be on 2-8pm, at Black Beach, on 31 December.
