Landcare launch at Hyams CreekHyams Creek after the rehabilitation work

The Jamberoo and Jerrara Community Landcare group is inviting you to a working bee on Saturday June 18 at Hyams Creek, Jamberoo.

The group, led by experienced bush regenerator Tracey Allen, is keen to start a Landcare team for the Hyams Creek area to follow up on the coral trees removal and revegetation works started by Kiama Council. The main aim is to limit erosion and protect this significant local waterway.

The Landcare group was formed on April 23 as a network of local property owners to assist each other enhance and maintain the rainforest and creeklines on their land.

This group has decided to invite the community to join them for the first working bee at Hyams Creek in Jamberoo and they hope to establish regular working bees with both landholders and community members.

Landcare Illawarra is made up of a group of local people who care for the environment, whether it be on private or public land. They volunteer, either as individuals or as a group, to improve the natural value of our land and its biodiversity, on coastlines, creeks, parks, agricultural land, woodlands, forests, hills and mountains.

Practical steps to benefit the environment include bush regeneration, weed control; revegetation; stabilising riverbanks and sand dunes; collecting litter; repairing walking tracks; protecting threatened species; sustainable cropping techniques, fencing and pest control programs.

In the Kiama area, Landcare has 10 community groups and one landholder network in Foxground with now in Jamberoo and Jerrara.

These community groups meet monthly to work on public land to control weeds, plant and maintain their sites. There is a large social element with many groups staying for refreshments after the work is done.

Landcare Illawarra also has a small network of nursery partners who grow plants for these projects and members collect seed. This ensures that any plantings are suited to the local environment.

Projects and groups are supported with some resources from Kiama Council and follow council advice on all sites.
