The Kiama Beach Tag event over the weekend was a great success according to organisers Steve Emmett and Keiron Duncan.
70 teams competed and were watched on by 3,000 spectators over the course of the day.
Local talent continued to shine with local teams winning five of the nine divisions. See great photos of the action caught by Brian Scott: At the beach: The 2023 Kiama Beach Tag .
“They won against some really high quality Sydney/Central Coast and ACT based sides,” Steve says.
“The Kiama team, Avcon, took out the men's open division this year and last year so they are our first ever back to back champions.”
It seems the move from Surf Beach to Kendalls Beach was the right call. As Steve puts it, “Kendalls was a massive hit.
“It had that really good vibe all day - people had lots of space to spread out, the bar was cool and we had some live music. The sun was out and lots of people were swimming in the ocean during the day to cool off.
“Everyone was very positive in their comments and feedback which makes all the work worthwhile.”
According to Steve, one of the highlights of the day was when six paratroopers landed on the sand with the Australian and Army flags.
“It created a different atmosphere, and it was a nice way to break up all the footy on the beach,” he says.
Steve and Keiron will let the sand settle before coming together again to plan a ‘bigger and better’ event next year.
“We are always looking to improve and make it a better experience for players and spectators so we’re taking everyone’s feedback on,” says Steve.
“We will look at getting some lights in, having some games go into the early evening and making a bit more of a spectacle of the grand finals rather than having multiple grand finals happen at once.”
Steve and Keiron thank Kendalls on the Beach Holiday Park and Kiama Council, who worked alongside them and allowed them to have the event, and Avcon for their support.
