Minnamurra Rainforest and visitors centre closed

The Minnamurra Rainforest and Visitor Centre is closed until further notice due to the extensive damage caused by recent flooding from last week’s heavy rainfall.

The closure is necessary for the safety of visitors and staff. This is the top priority for the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) and also so staff can assess and address the damage.

NPWS Acting Area Manager, Nathan Cattell says, “We understand the disappointment this closure may cause to our visitors ahead of the autumn school holidays, but safety remains our utmost concern.”

Water levels in the Minnamurra River exceeded three metres above normal levels on Saturday. Two bridges on the Lyrebird Loop track were significantly damaged, and one bridge was destroyed.

A large landslide occurred at the main entry to the rainforest and surrounding picnic areas suffered extreme erosion with a number of trees down across the area.

Geotechnical experts have been contacted to assess suspected rockfall areas and an engineer has been engaged to assess structural damage.

The area will reopen as soon as it is deemed safe to do so. You can find more information here.
