The community is invited to help raise funds for people with Parkinson's disease at this year's Parkinson’s 'Walk in the Park' along the waterfront at Kiama Harbour.
“We're stepping it up this year,” says Lesley Errington, co-ordinator of the event and Kiama Parkinson’s Support Group.
“We will have two free exercise stations set up. One is a warm-up for the walk and the other is a 15-minute dance exercise run by the Dexercise group, an initiative by Kiama Parkinson’s Support Group for local seniors.”
The day will also feature one of their biggest raffles yet with over 20 prizes including a ride in a classic Mustang car to Berry, baskets of high-quality beauty products, paintings and a range of vouchers for local businesses.
Rotary’s beloved sausage sizzle barbeque, which fed over 200 people at last year’s event, will provide lunch for the day.
All proceeds go to the local Parkinson’s Support Group and Parkinson’s NSW to fund nurses and the health line.
“There are currently more than 200,000 people in Australia living with Parkinson’s disease, with 69,000 people in NSW. By 2040 the number is expected to double,” Lesley says.
Kiama Parkinson’s Support Group will also hold their local community hero’s award which will be presented to exercise physiologist, Sarah Clem.
“She always goes out of her way to help people. If she hasn’t seen someone for a while she will ring or go visit them and always offers to drive people home from Dexercise. She does it all in her own time,” Lesley says.
