Talk for history and train buffsBombo Station in 1947

Heritage conservation expert, Ben Calvert, is giving the next Kiama & District Historical Society Talk on all aspects of the history of Bombo Railway Station.

The talk will include the history of the station (which is the closest to the sea in Australia), an overview of its current condition, a review of its significance, and an exploration of some of the issues regarding its current heritage management.

The author of several heritage impact assessments across NSW, Ben has recently completed a Masters of Heritage Conservation for the University of Sydney School of Architecture.

For this, he was required to research and prepare a Conservation Management Plan for a State Heritage listed NSW railway station, which led him to his primary and secondary research of Bombo Railway Station.

His research of the station included its planning, construction, use, development and importance to the local community and State.

“When our train to or from Sydney stops briefly at Bombo, we have little idea of its rich history and its vital importance to our district for over 130 years,” says Kiama and District Historical Society’s Gillian Spooner.

“This talk is our unique opportunity to hear all about its fascinating, and at times, surprising history.”

Saturday 15 October, Kiama Library Auditorium, 2.30pm. Free. Followed by afternoon tea.
